It’s no great secret that the popularity of boxing has went down the shitter in recent times. Action packed fights between big name fighters have become rare causing many fans to lose interest. When the sport has some positive momentum, that momentum needs to be harnessed and built upon if boxing is going to break back into the mainstream. For the first time in a long time boxing had some good vibrations following the exciting heavyweight battle between Klitschko and Joshua two weekends ago. With another huge fight scheduled for this past weekend, it looked like boxing would have a great opportunity to grab some headlines in the sports world for the second week in a row. Unfortunately that momentum was not harnessed due to the daddy’s boy baby-back bitch named Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
In a highly anticipated fight with Canelo Alvarez, Chavez Jr. had a chance to prove that he is more than just the spawn of his father’s sac. He had the chance to fight for the honor to be most popular fighter in the boxing crazed nation of Mexico, like his father was, by defeating the man that currently holds that title. Although Chavez Jr. was considered a significant underdog coming into the fight, many hoped his size advantage and solid chin would lead to an exciting slugfest with both men furiously exchanging and withstanding powerful blows. When Chavez Jr. came in appearing to be in the best condition of his career, under the agreed upon catch weight of 164.5 lbs, this hope was only amplified. Unfortunately due to a lack of will or possibly the worst fucking game plan ever conceived Chavez Jr. found himself getting battered around the ring for 12 rounds like a liberal at a Trump rally.
Whether it was his trainer Nacho Berestein (Great Name) or his own decision to attempt to outbox Canelo in the middle of the ring, the strategy was utterly idiotic. Chavez Jr. needed to use his height and length to jab keeping Canelo at bay and unleash vicious blows to both the body and head when he was able to pin Canelo against the ropes. When Canelo did allow this to happen, Chavez Jr. peppered him with weak shots and backed away seemingly satisfied with landing a couple of love taps and escaping without sustaining too much damage from Canelo’s counter attack. As far as jabs go, Chavez Jr. was out landed 83 to 15 and threw less than half the jabs that Canelo threw. In total he was outland 228 to 71 and accounted for exactly half the punches thrown that his opponent did. Not exactly the type of numbers that tell the story of a competitor that left it all in the ring. Those are the numbers of a fighter who was defeated before the fight even started my friends.
The one good thing that came out of this fight is the confirmation of boxing’s most in demand matchup, outside of Floyd and Conor, between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez. GGG was ringside looking like a 90’s Bond villain (GGG Ringside Pic) and joined Canelo in the ring where they announced that they will be facing off against each other on September 16. This is the fight fans have been clamoring for and there is almost no possible way it can disappoint. Canelo has ducked this fight in the past but now will face his biggest challenge since his loss to Mayweather. Maybe he decided there is no better time than now after seeing some cracks in what looked like the impenetrable armor of GGG during his last contest against Daniel Jacobs. We will find out in 4 short months.
I came into this fight hoping for a great Mexican rivalry that could stand with the likes of Berrera Morales. While us boxing fans did not get that, we may have been given a greater reward in the form of a mega-fight that could turn into a great rivalry between two of the sports most skilled competitors. As for Chavez Jr., I hope he hangs his gloves up for good after this heartless display. I liked him better when he was getting suspended for smoking weed anyway. So in the words of the great Ari Gold…
